Barry University and Millennium Anesthesia Care host Cardiac Anesthesiology Review

Jeanne Marie Antolchick, CRNA

On Saturday, March 21, 2009, Barry University and Millennium Anesthesia Care at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa hosted a Cardiac Anesthesiology Review. Dr. Mani Vindhya reviewed cardiothoracic anatomy and physiology for the graduate student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) and RNs. Dr. George Freeman presented a powerpoint on pre-operative evaluation of the cardiac patient undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Finally, Dr. Satish Reddy reviewed valvular pathologies complete with transesophageal echocardiograms.

The SRNAs and RNs who attended the seminar found the lectures very informative. "Millennium's anesthesiologists are committed to our education as evidenced by their willingness to volunteer their time to further our understanding of the specifics of anesthesia as it relates to cardiothoracic medicine," said Lainey Kelley, SRNA.

Barry University sponsored a buffet brunch, which the participants enjoyed immensely. St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa is one of Barry University's clinical sites for the Masters of Science in Anesthesiology program.

Barry University SRNAs spent CRNA Week 2009 making sure everyone knows the secret is out! Taking advantage of the AANA's generosity, the SRNAs distributed pens, pins, table tents, posters and brochures throughout St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa to promote our CRNA profession. The SRNAs presented pastry and fruit breakfast trays to their anesthesia clinical instructors to thank them for their dedication to nurse anesthesia education. Additionally, Barry University catered a lovely luncheon for the anesthesia staff to reinforce our gratitude. Finally, godiva chocolates were delivered to key administrators throughout the clinical site. The SRNAs receive tremendous support and encouragement from the Anesthesiologists and CRNAs of Millennium Anesthesia Care (MAC) as well as from the hospital staff at St. Joseph's Hospital. "We are excited to be a clinical partner with Barry University's CRNA program," says Dr. Alfredo Orbegoso, Clinical Coordinator. Barry graduates Jeanne Antolchick, CRNA, Angela Corners, CRNA and Andrea Castillo, CRNA decided to extend their Winter 2008 clinical experience by joining MAC as employees following their May 2008 graduation. Says Angela Corners, CRNA, "I wouldn't want to work anywhere else. The anesthesiologists and CRNAs were terrific when I was an SRNA. Their support has continued as I transistion into a seasoned CRNA."
